News from School-to-Career

Dear School-to-Career Staff:

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to the students and parents of San Diego Unified School District. I am excited and pleased to be your Interim Director.

While Rob is greatly missed, we know he is excited and doing well in Atlanta. He sends his best regards and does return to San Diego from time to time, to finalize the sale of his home and prepare his family for the move to Atlanta. In following the School-to-Career tradition of an end of-the-year staff meeting, please plan to attend:

Professional Development Staff Meeting
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
4 – 5:30 p.m.
Prado Restaurant Ballroom

The Professional Development portion of the meeting (4 – 5 p.m.) will be for pay.

I am looking forward to getting re-acquainted with old friends and having the opportunity to meet many new ones.

Sincerely,

Virginia Eves

Hats off to all of our Career Technical Education Students and Teachers for Making this a Banner Year!
By Lynn McConville

Thanks to all of your hard work and dedication, 2006-2007 has been a great year for Career Technical Education (CTE). CTE continues to successfully impact student performance across our district and state and your hard work has been recognized. Recent examples include: Governor Schwarzenegger making your courses a priority, legislators increasing funding for student equipment and supplies, senators visiting your programs, voters approving bonds for CTE facilities, principals requesting more of your classes, students producing professional quality projects, business partners asking for student interns and our Board of Education members requesting updates regarding your innovative Career Tech Programs. Your continued efforts ensure that San Diego Unified students receive the skills and knowledge needed to make a successful transition from high school to college and productive careers.

News from Sacramento: Funding and Legislation
By Lynn McConville

Feel like someone is talking about you? They are; our legislators that is, and it’s all great news. As of March 28, 2007, there were over 60 new bills supporting Career Technical Education awaiting approval by the State Legislature.

Following are highlights from two bills that recently passed:

AB 2448 – requires that by July 1, 2010, 90% of all courses offered by ROP be part of a coherent sequence of courses (2 or more feeders leading to the capstone ROP course) and by July 1, 2011, adult attendance in ROP courses be limited to 10%. The good news for San Diego Unified is that enrollment in ROP courses is 98% high school students and only 2% adults and the majority of our courses are part of a program of study or sequence of courses.

AB 1802 – Equipment and Supplies for Career Technical Education Programs- allocated over $1,000,000 to our district for CTE equipment and supplies. A team of 14 teachers convened to recommend how $5,000,000 in requests was to be spent. We’re happy to report that sites will be notified about approved purchases in May and purchasing will begin no later than July 1, 2007.
